Small Things (14 August)

Jesus asked, "What is the Kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it with? It is like this. A man takes a mustard seed and plants it in his field. The plant grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make their nests in its branches."
Luke 13:18-19
The servant who had received five thousand coins came in and handed over the other five thousand. "You gave me five thousand coins, sir," he said. "Look! Here are another five thousand that I have earned." "Well done, you good and faithful servant!" said his master. "You have been faithful in managing small amounts, so I will put you in charge of large amounts. Come on in and share my happiness!"
Matthew 25:20-21

Everything that is significant in God's economy begins small, so small that it is invisible. We can find ourselves frustrated by this principle, because sometimes the beginning is so small that it looks to us as nothing at all. Many of us wonder in our hearts, when will I do something big for God? Why am I off in this forsaken place where nobody knows where I am and no one sees what I am accomplishing? Must I do this chore day and night without any recognition?

We are all in need of recognition and the feeling that we are important and needed. But we can easily forget that God has put us in this place of small things in order that his big things can be realized.

We begin as a mustard seed, our lives are like that mustard seed, our dreams and hopes are like that mustard seed. Let us have faith, therefore, that this forgotten place where we find ourselves is the place where we learn to work out all the details of the small things. When all that has been completed, we shall see ourselves graduating to a bigger task and greater responsibility.

"Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin." (Zechariah 4:10) (NLT)

"Who, then, is the faithful and wise servant? He is the one that his master will put in charge, to run the household and give the other servants their share of the food at the proper time. How happy that servant is if his master finds him doing this when he comes home! Indeed, I tell you, the master will put that servant in charge of all his property." (Luke 12:42- 44)
