Just the Right Size (11 June)

Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God's peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7

Several months ago one of my friends had a fire in her bedroom and her feet were burned. Although there has been healing, she still suffers from pain and swelling, and she wondered how she'd find comfortable shoes. I promised to pray that God would give her the perfect shoes. Recently she wrote to tell me what had happened.

"The other morning I looked at my feet and was a little disappointed that my left foot is still slightly larger than my right, a real problem for new shoes. I told myself I should not be vain and should settle for some cheap shoes for the time being. Itrusted the Lord to help me find the right shoes. I went into the nearest town and to the nearest shoe shop where I saw a very nice, but rather expensive walking shoe. I triedthe shoeon my right foot and then asked the assistant if I could try the left shoe. She duly disappeared and returned with the shoe. 'This will be the acid test,' I thought. To my surprise it fit my swollen left foot perfectly. I thanked the assistant, praised and thanked the Lord, asking forgiveness if I had been extravagant, and walked to the counter to pay for them.

"As she was packing the shoes she said, 'Oh, I'm so sorry. I've given you the wrong size. The left shoe is 6½ and the right is 6. I'll go and get the right size for you.' I was quite dismayed. She was gone some time and returned inevident confusion. 'I can't find another pair of shoes like this,' she said. She called the manager, who promptly sent her to the basement to look among new stock. After a long while she returned declaring, 'There aren't any shoes like this in the shop.' 'Don't worry,' I reassured her. 'I'll take them anyway; they seem to fit me well enough,' to which the manager replied, 'Well, if you're happy with them, OK, you can have them at half price.'"

Life can be difficult sometimes with many challenges. Maybe you're feeling discouraged right now, as though you're carrying the world on your shoulders. Worrying can be exhausting. Take the burden and say "God, maybe I don't understand what's going on, but I thank you for being involved in this situation. I know that you have the solution."

Our thanks and trust are like keys that release us from the weight of the worry. The same God who prepared those shoes for my friend is able to meet your need. He longs to be gracious to you.

"I have told you this so that you will have peace by being united to me. The world will make you suffer. But be brave! I have defeated the world!" (John 16:33)
